About Ludup

Music was always the first language. Before the code, before the companies, before the long and winding path of a life fully lived, there were melodies and lyrics. For UK singer-songwriter Ludup (Lee David Painter), the journey back to that first language has taken 30 years—and it’s a story worth the wait.

Born in Stevenage and raised in Nottingham, Lee's world was steeped in music. With a guitar-playing father and an uncle who served as musical director for the legendary Roy Orbison, a life in music felt less like a choice and more like a destiny. By 14, he was playing bass in bands with friends, soon stepping up to the microphone and discovering his voice as a songwriter. The early 90s were a flurry of creativity: four-track demos, late-night writing sessions, and the raw ambition of a young artist cutting his teeth.

But life has a way of presenting crossroads. In 1995, on the cusp of a potential tour with a local band, Lee faced a difficult decision. It wasn’t just about choosing a mortgage over a life on the road; it was about creative control. The path being offered wasn’t his own. He needed to be the leader, the one steering the ship. So, he made the choice to step away from that version of the dream and put his creative energy elsewhere.

A Different Kind of Art

That energy found a new home in the world of technology. Lee discovered that programming was its own art form—a world where logic could be beautiful and elegant code could feel as satisfying as a perfectly crafted song. He poured his passion into a new career, becoming a successful software engineer and, eventually, a pioneering entrepreneur. He built companies from the ground up, sold a business, and experienced the dizzying highs and challenging lows that come with forging your own path.

Throughout these decades, the music never truly fell silent. It became a quiet, inner dialogue. Unfinished songs—"Someone Sacred," "Mother's Son," "The Man Inside"—waited patiently, becoming richer and more meaningful as they were infused with real-life experiences of love, devastating loss, and hard-won wisdom.

The Turning Point

Turning 50 in 2023, and reflecting on the loss of his beloved mother when she was only 52, brought a powerful question into focus: What am I leaving behind? The answer was clear. The songs could no longer remain unfinished. The music had to be shared. It was time to preserve the whole self—not just the entrepreneur, but the artist who had been there all along.

The return wasn't seamless. After 30 years, that first attempt at a scratch vocal was, in his own words, "awful." But where a younger man might have been discouraged, the engineer saw a problem that needed solving. He sought out a vocal coach and dedicated himself to the craft with renewed discipline. Today, his voice is stronger and more versatile than ever, a testament to the idea that it's never too late to reclaim a part of yourself.

The Music of Now

Today, Ludup makes music with a perspective that only comes from a life lived. His influences are a testament to his love for great songwriting—the soul of George Michael, the swagger of INXS, the showmanship of Elton John, and the raw poetry of The Cure. He masterfully blends pop, rock, and disco, creating everything from tender, heartfelt ballads to vibrant, irresistible anthems.

For Ludup, success is no longer about fame or fortune. It’s about connection. It’s about having listeners hear the real person behind the songs. It’s about one person finding comfort or joy in a melody that has been waiting 30 years to be heard.

This isn’t a comeback. It’s a continuation. Welcome to the journey.
